Nations committed to a long-term goal of limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius – a target set by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. They agreed to limit annual greenhouse gas emissions to a level to about one-and-a-half times the levels emitted in 1990.
But since then, emissions in the oil, gas, coal and cement industries have actually increased. For example, natural gas is now more popular than coal in the US. And global industry’s business-as-usual emissions have increased by about 5 percent since the Copenhagen agreement, according to the Climate Action Tracker.
Global carbon dioxide emissions are down 10 percent since 2005, according to the UN’s Carbon Market Watch. But that’s mostly because countries have kept their emissions targets, rather than reducing emissions levels.
The problem is that pledges aren’t enough to get us to the two degrees target. We’re on track to have three degrees Celsius of warming by the end of the century. Not only that, but even with the pledges set in Copenhagen, we’re not on track to meet the target.
Related: Will we ever reach the two degree limit?
From 2020, it’s not clear that even the global carbon emissions cuts outlined in the Copenhagen agreement will be achieved. Once you add in the pledges from Warsaw, Paris, Lima and Bonn, much of the effort to reduce carbon dioxide emissions is actually in the hands of private companies.
Big corporations want action. But they’re not doing much to help — yet.
The Trump administration, for example, is now proposing to withdraw from the Paris Agreement.
By failing to act, the government is ceding to dirty fossil fuels — and handing a monopoly
